FIRST PRIZES: ‘Daily Mail NOT the Turner Prize, 2004’ (which is on a par with ‘The Turner Prize’ but specifically for painting, and selected from 10,000 entries.)  ‘RBSA Prize Show’ (2004 & 1996). Birmingham Pastel Society (1995 & 1994). RBSA: Members & Associates (2004,2003,2006), ‘Open Drawing & Pastel’ (2002 & 1995), ‘Open oils’ (1996).  Commission prize in the ‘FBA Women on canvas Portrait Competition’ (1991). Hunting Group Art Prizes Finalist  special commendations (1983/4,1982/3,1980/1). ’Mid Art’ (1984). RBA Rowney Prize’ (1982).  Midlands Arts Centre ‘Open 25’ (1981). ‘Spirit of London Painting Competition’ (1980). ‘Royal-Over-Seas-League’ (1980 & 1979) where he was honoured by being presented to her majesty the Queen. ‘Stowells Trophy’ competition for all Art Colleges & Universities (1979).  RA Schools: ‘Turner Gold Medal’, ‘Still-life’, ‘Academic Drawing’,’Landseer Life Painting’, ‘Sir James Walker’ for an outstanding group of works. RBSA ‘Feeney Award’ (1977). National School Award for intermediate Art (1969). Moseley Rd Art School Junior Art Prize (1967).

Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation Scholarship (1980 – 81).  City & Guilds FE & AE Adult Teaching Cert’ (1986-87).  University of Central England in Birmingham:  Postgraduate Diploma in History of Art & Design (1987-90); then enrolled for MPhil/PhD research (1994-96) but adjourned.

EXHIBITIONS:   RBSA from the age of 16.  Subsequently also including: the RBA (from 1979), RA Summer Show (from 1978), National Portrait Gallery (1984 & 1987), V & A Museum hung between a Stanley Spencer and a Spencer Gore (‘Garden Exhibition’ 1979). Invited artist at Mall Gallery exhibitions ‘The Discerning Eye’ & ‘Making a Mark’ devoted to drawings by leading names of the contemporary art scene (1996). RBSA theme shows: The Topographical Tradition’ (2000) & ’The Human Form’ (2004).  “Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize Show’ competition for representational painting (2005). Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery: ‘The Birmingham Open’, & ‘The Art of Birmingham 1840-2008’, ‘Birmingham Open’.

 PUBLICATIONS:    Images from his school days onwards are included with other artists in over 30 art books written by a range of authors, and he has been commissioned to write numerous magazine articles about his art work. Poems are in  over 20 mixed anthologies.  Among his biographical dictionary inclusions are: ‘The Handbook of Modern British Painters & Printmakers 1900 – 1990’  &  ‘Dictionary of Artists In Britain Since 1945’.

 CHARACTERISTICS OF HIS ART WORK:   Works are often in progress for months (sometimes years) beckoning time-layered interacting detail.  There is a crucial balance between being humble before nature while recording a detailed exploration of it. Plus inward and outward looking while trying to make sense of issues, feelings etc that may also be meaningful to others. Overlapping themes include:

~ Homage to family.

~ Prolonged observation of suburban gardens through windows.  Also flowers in their own right.

~ The life room.  He builds upon and extends his RA Schools experience, while also providing an unbroken continuum of life drawing opportunity for the Birmingham arts community.

~ Self-portraiture  &  portraits of others.

~ An artist’s lay figure as a vehicle to combine self analysis with statements about the “struggling artist” and the “human condition”.

~ Allegoric prints indicative of stages in life.

~ Meaningful fantasy.

   PRESENT SITUATION:  For nearly thirty years Paul has been only too grateful to have been able to give other artists opportunities to fulfil their creative dreams. This has been via his very full timetable of mostly AE teaching.   Continuation with his fine art career is a constant up hill struggle, and achievements  –  such as they are  – often  feel very much against the odds and despite everything.


  ASPIRATIONS:   He would like to ask if there is anyone “out there” to help the next stages of his career to happen?  This includes  reaching a wider audience via prestigious exhibition & book projects, with television coverage. He has been working on a  book about his art work,  he feels that he could make a worthwhile contribution to major thematic group shows,  but mostly, he seeks opportunities to shift the balance from teaching to “doing”. This includes  “artist in residencies”,  in-situ-commissions (see above listed themes), and studio research time in sympathetic art colleges/museums etc, where progress with his art work would be in everyone’s interests. He would welcome the opportunity to complete long-term projects in progress, and the prospect of new works via new horizons. He would be happy to discuss any mutually beneficial  ideas.
