Introduction to Printmaking
A taster course for beginners or for those who wish to refresh previous skills. Three techniques will be taught in this day workshop: monotype, dry point and lino print.

Introduction to Reduction Lino Printing

Learn how to make a two or three colour reduction lino print onto paper.  This is where one piece of lino is used multiple times in one print, as the lino plate is recut after each colour  printed.
You will be working from an image or design of your own and we will also cover registration technique for lino printing.

Introduction to Screen Printing on Paper

Come and enjoy a day of screen printing. Learn this colourful technique and create your own original prints. You will learn how to make a photo-stencil by coating a silk screen with light sensitive photo-emulsion and exposing your own image or design onto it using a UV exposure unit.  You will also use a vacuum screen bed and learn registration techniques to enable you to hand pull a small edition of two coloured prints on paper using water based inks.

All materials will be provided including cartridge paper and different coloured screen printing inks.

Please note you will need a black and white image or design suitable for screen printing.

Suitable for beginners and those looking to refresh their skills.

Be involved in the exploration of this simple yet effective technique in the creation of bold and striking work utilising one block of lino. Will also cover how to work your block, a practical registration method and health and safety issues.

Printmaking   –   an experimental one day course.

An experimental one day course teaches you the basics of Collagraph, mono-printing and dry-point so you can then combine them all to get exciting results.

Collagraph plates are textured, rich and beautiful when inked up. We will look at the basics of making a plate, you can bring a plate with you or use the ones we have.

Mono-prints are one off prints and we will be looking at a number of ways to generate them.

Drypoint plates are primarily line drawings, can be made quickly and easily.

Participants will be shown the different methods of printing and then be encouraged to print them in different combinations to get exciting results. Suitable for complete beginners to more experienced printmakers who want to experiment with multi layered prints.

Participants should leave the course with a number of finished prints and the skills to carry on.

The still life is one of the most symbolic and enduring genre’s of the last few centuries. During this one day course we will look at the Still Life in history in painting and in print and work in various different ways to achieve a number of results. Participants can bring their own drawings and photographs and we will set up a still life in the studio to work from using Collagraph, dry-point and monotypes to achieve exciting results. Suitable for inexperienced printmakers and experienced printmakers who want to concentrate on still life for a day.

Experimental Landscapes in Print   

Printmaking and landscapes go together perfectly due to the nature of printmaking. During this one day course we will look at the Landscape in print and work in various different ways to achieve a range of results from controlled to free abstract. Participants can bring their own drawings and photographs which

will be transformed through Collagraph, dry-point and monotypes in to exciting results. Suitable for inexperienced printmakers and experienced printmakers who want to concentrate on the landscape for a day. There is a Wonderful view from the studio that participants may want to use as their source material.

Photographic Solar plate etching  

This one day course will take the participants through the process of making and printing a Photographic Solar plate etching. This process enables printmakers to take a photograph and expose it on to a metal etching plate which can then be printed like an etching.

There will be an additional cost of £10 for materials to cover the solar plates, if you have your own please let us know before booking.

Please note you will need an A5 photographic image on clear acetate.

Creative Printmaking Course  (Monday afternoons)

A series of 6 week courses introducing fine art printmaking processes.  Covers drypoint, monoprint, relief prints from lino, optionally also solar plate etching. No previous knowledge is required, but returners with some printmaking experience are also welcome, plus students familiar with other art forms or wishing to supplement their studies. Beginners will be introduced to methods via demonstration and previous examples.  Returners will be assisted to develop their own themes.  The tutor may also be working on his own prints.
